Ensrud has been a life-long jazz aficionado and is friends with many renowned jazz artists. The improvisational sounds, freedom and rhythms of jazz music undoubtedly influenced the development of his uniquely vibrant painting style. Attending live jazz performances from the time he was a teenager, Ensrud often carried a drawing pad to capture jazz artists in the midst of their brilliant performances. Count Basie affectionately called Ensrud ‘Baby Wayne’ due to his child-like enthusiasm for the music. Attending several of Basie’s band rehearsals and recording sessions, Ensrud often had the honor of sitting next to the great bandleader on his piano bench.
